Where the Mountains Meet
the Prairie In Waterton, some of the most ancient mountains in the
Canadian Rockies abruptly meet the grasslands of the great plains
prairie. Located near the narrowest point in the Rocky Mountains,
several natural regions meet with dramatic natural results!
Wildflowers
Waterton is extraordinarily rich with wildflowers. More than 50% of
all wildflowers found in Alberta, including many rare species, bloom
in Waterton in the spring and summer. Beargrass is Waterton’s showiest
plant. The Waterton Wild Flower-Fest is 10 days of special events
and guided excursions to see, photograph, paint and behold the more
than 900 plant species that call Waterton home. June 17 - 26, 2005. Website: www.watertonwildflowers.com
Wildlife Viewing at its Best
Waterton offers exceptional wildlife viewing! Bear, Elk, Bighorn Sheep,
Deer and Coyote are species, which are often viewed safely from Waterton’s
scenic roads. In summer, visitors can drive through the Bison Paddocks
and watch a small herd of plains bison. The National Park protects
a rich variety of wildlife habitat and is one of the few places in
North America where all native carnivores, including grizzly and wolves,
still survive. The park, located on migratory bird routes, is a great
place for birding. In spring and fall, large flocks of migrating songbirds,
ducks, swans, and geese use the marsh and lake areas. The trumpeter
swan and the Vaux’s swift are considered rare.
Peace and Friendship
In celebration of the peace and goodwill that exists between Canada
and the United States, Glacier National Park, Montana, and Waterton
Lakes National Park, Alberta, were joined to form Waterton-Glacier
International Peace Park, the first of its kind in the world.
World Heritage Site
In 1995 Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park became a World Heritage
Site. Exceptional natural beauty, a special climate, the meeting of
mountains and prairie and the significant triple divide watershed
(rivers flowing into three oceans) are the Parks distinguishing features.
Waterton Townsite
Waterton’s visitor service centre is located in the heart of the National
Park. The cozy mountain community is surrounded by magnificent scenery
and offers all the services visitors will need to make their stay

the Park. Accommodations range from country inns, mountain motels,
